African Artisanal Works in Dakar: Objects of Art and African Creation – Galerie Arte

Galerie Arte, based in Dakar, presents a permanent selection of objects of art from across the African continent, reflecting the richness and vitality of African creation, between heritage and contemporaneity. It brings together works by artisans and artists selected for the excellence of their craftsmanship, the quality of their materials, and the singularity of their expression.

Within this space, the distinctions between fine craftsmanship, art, and design give way to a more nuanced understanding of creative practices. These categories, often defined outside the continent, do not always reflect local realities. The gallery embraces a cross-disciplinary approach, where practices intersect and engage in dialogue, revealing a continuum of creation inherent to African cultures.

This perspective highlights the diversity and depth of artisanal knowledge. African artisans distinguish themselves across numerous fields: gold and silver filigree jewelry crafted by Senegalese master jewelers, internationally recognized; silver adornments by Tuareg artisans; leatherwork from Mali; as well as wood, iron, and bronze works, particularly from Burkina Faso. Textiles also occupy a central place, with handwoven and hand-dyed fabrics — bogolan, korhogo, indigo — alongside Kuba textiles from the Kasai region and nchak cloths, all reflecting highly refined technical and aesthetic traditions.

The gallery maintains long-standing relationships with these creators, built over time and sometimes passed down through generations. Whenever possible, artisans themselves come to present their works, offering a direct encounter with the object, its story, and its making.

At Galerie Arte, artisans and artists are valued equally: their names accompany their works, when signed or identified, affirming their full place within the creative process.

One creator, one work, one signature.

Each piece is selected with rigor, reflecting a constant commitment to quality, authenticity, and curatorial coherence.
